story

Chobits is about a boy named Motosuwa Hideki and his persocon, Chii. It starts off with Hideki being in Tokyo. In Tokyo at this time, many people are using persocons (personal computers). Persocons are like androids, except they function like a computer. Anyways, these persocons are very expensive. Hideki really wants one (mainly to check e-mail and visit porn sites...) but can't afford it. However, one day, he finds a persocon lying in the dumpster. He picks it up and brings it home, failing to see that he dropped a diskette that was with it. After much trouble, he finally figures how to turn the persocon on. After he does so, all it knew how to say was 'chii'. Hence he names it Chii. (Note: Persocons are neither female or male. However, I'm going to address Chii as female because she was created with the form of female.)

Hideki is computer illiterate. But he finds a manual and follows the instructions on hooking up Chii to his TV. However Chii has no data in her system. Not knowing what to do, he finds his friend Hiroshi Shinbo the next day. Shinbo connects his own mini persocon, Sumomo, to Chii. Unfortunately, Chii's system is too powerful, and Sumomo's OS crashes. Shinbo then recommends Hideki to see Kokubunji Minoru, a person who expertizes in persocons. When Hideki visits Minoru, he is greeted by Minoru's 4 persocon maids. These maids are all custom-made persocons by Minoru, unlike normal persocons that are bought in the market. However, like Sumomo, all of them crashes. Yuzuki, Minoru's custom-made persocon in the image his sister who supposedly has a rather more powerful OS, comes out and offers to try find out about Chii's OS. Hideki first thought Yuzuki was Minoru's actual sister. Anyways, Yuzuki also fails, except for her system did not completely crash.

After that, Minoru has a speculation on who Chii is. He suggests that Chii may be part of a series called Chobits. Not much is known about them, and people aren't even sure that it exists. However, if they do exist, they are known to operate without an OS and have the ability to have feelings, unlike other persocons that only function as computers. As Hideki was leaving, Minoru notices that Chii has the learning ability of persocons and tells Hideki to teach her things. And so the adventures of Hideki and Chii start as she learns new things, Hideki and Minoru continues to try to find out more about Chii's past and more about Chobits, and more characters add to the story with connections to Chii or with little side stories of their own. :)
